Residency Licensure - Birth Through Kindergarten
Contact(s): Jaime Shelton
The Birth Through Kindergarten Residency Certificate program is designed for individuals
currently working in a NC Pre-K classroom in a licensed childcare facility or in a
public school system who wish to earn licensure certification to teach Birth Through
Kindergarten by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. The curriculum
builds on candidates' hands-on classroom experience by developing the pedagogical
competencies needed for effective early childhood teaching, including coursework in
learning theory, instructional technology, school policies and procedures, and the
expectations and responsibilities of educators. Candidates also study teaching strategies
and methods for specific content and specialty areas, formative and summative assessment,
data-informed instructional practice, and classroom organization and management approaches
that support a wide range of student learning needs. Upon completion, graduates will
have demonstrated the pedagogical competencies and effective teaching practices required
for licensure. To become fully licensed, candidates must also complete pre-service
training, pass all state-required assessments, and meet the criteria outlined in the
North Carolina Teacher Evaluation System.
